A peak performance program

Dr. Stetz has published extensively on stress and healthy ways to cope (check her "ABOUT US" link). She has designed a Peak Performance Program that consists of assessments and brain-mind training.  


She does not see chronic cases and only works with healthy clients that, really, want to move forward in life. Biofeedback Therapy Hawaii will help you identify your main mind-setting and behavioral practices. This information is crucial to incorporate your goal/s into your own Peak Performance Program. 


Her program is very holistic where she will see you as a whole being trying to balance time and energy. Some of the techniques from their toolbox are brain-mapping, biofeedback/ neurofeedback, and coaching.

During your first (Intake) session, you will be asked to fill-out a Consent form, surveys, engage in an interview, and get a look into your brain waves. 


Brain waves generate electrical activity. We can see their activity by placing 19 sensors over your head (just like when your doctor places a sensor on your chest to listen to your heart).


The EEG data then gets translated quantitatively into colors to create a brain map. 


Just like any other topographic map, it will show important information needed to start the mind-body peak performance protocol that you need,  


These maps will show which is the most prominent brain wave that you have (e.g., High Beta) and its' brain localization (e.g., Frontal Lobe). This information will be crucial to identify the best protocol to train you during your upcoming sessions. For example, having excessive high Beta waves (standard deviations over the norm, displayed in color red), in the frontal lobe, might mean that the client is very anxious. Therefore, this client will be a great candidate for a relaxation protocol to get where s/he want to be in life.

BIOFEEDBACK/ NEUROFEEDBACK

During the second session, you will likely finish other surveys but also start training more your mind and your brain. That is, we will address the way that you think and your physiological reactions (e.g., increased heart rate when stressed). 


Our main techniques used are called Biofeedback and Neurofeedback (or brain biofeedback).


NEUROFEEDBACK is getting information from your central nervous system or brain.


  • Specifically, we will probably use the same sensors used during the Brain Map session. 


BIOFEEDBACK is getting information from your peripheral nervous system or body. 


  • We might also place sensors in other parts of your body (e.g., earlobe for pulse) to also capture peripheral nervous system's reactivity. 


Once we place the sensors, you will be asked to do some exercises as breathing and looking at the monitor.  The feedback from your brain and/or your body will be presented to you via visual graphs, bars, a fast flying ship, or auditory cues as beeps or music volume. This feedback will let us know how well is your training going. The goal is just to self-monitor and self-regulate for a healthier, happier, and productive life!

In Biofeedback Therapy Hawaii (AKA: By the Waves) we see our clients in a holistic way. That is, we believe that the reason that you are coming to visit us is because something in your life needs more balance.


Therefore, we will ask you some things related to how you go on your typical day. For example, how is your sleeping, your eating, your mindfulness/ relaxation times, even your hobbies! The more you decide to share with us, the more we can help you get back to where you want to be.


We believe in an actual connection between how we think, how we feel, and how we act. 


For example, if our spouse does something that we don't like, we might think that s/he does not respect us. Then, we might get upset, and say something to start an argument. 


In our office, we will try to break down that connection into separate components to understand it better and choose a better reaction if it happens again.
